With a decent eight hours sleep under my belt, I rose early the next morning to travel into the agency.

Grady scheduled another briefing where all agents on the case could come together, go through every victim one by one, and coordinate all we had. He’d assigned Wilson to make notes of key facts, while I made notes relating to my visions.

On the way over, my phone rang.

It was Dan’s line.

“Hello,” I answered through the hands-free.

“Hi, Terra.”

I almost slammed my foot on the accelerator in surprise when Cole’s voice came through the speakers.

“Cole,” I spluttered out. “Sorry. I thought you were Dan.”

“No. It’s me. I’m in Dan’s office. But I can’t stay on Earthside for long. I have a meeting to get to. Just like you do, I hear?”

“Yes,” I said, tentative. “I’m heading in now.”

“Okay. I won’t keep you long.” He sounded sad, tired.

“What’s up?”

“I’ve got to have an official update with you to put on record, but I thought it might be better for us to do it over the phone.”

“Okay.”

“I wanted to speak to Dan this morning, and he said you were due in about eight. I thought I would catch you on your way in to make it easier on the both of us.”

“Oh,” I whispered, hurting for him, hurting for what I once wanted.

“Dan informed me you’ve taken my orders on board, and that you’re working with Agent Grady on the Earthside case?”

“Yes. That’s right.” My voice sounded too high pitched to come across as nonchalant, but I swallowed and plowed on, anyway. “We’re still working on it. The killer is evading us so far, but we saved a potential victim yesterday. Then there’s Koryn Stewart who we rescued prior. We’re pissing him off, so hopefully, that will trip him up. Perhaps force him into making a mistake.” I exhaled. “It’s not like back home. Things are a lot easier over there.”

“Can’t Mayra perform a tracking spell?”

“Not without knowing who he is she can’t. She said she’d need something of The Bard’s to activate the spell.” I hesitated. “Please don’t put the idea into her head.”

“I don’t intend to. She needs to stay assigned to the IET for now, anyway. It pleases the Consilium that Daha Mishnal is no longer an issue, but they’re eager for more news.”

“Sure they are,” I said, exasperated at their audacity. “They dragged their heels before the bomb went off, blocking us at every turn. Now they want everything done at the snap of their fingers. Maybe they should just send an alert out on Earthside news and tell everyone to be on the lookout for a necromancer mage. Or a sex-craved incubus. Or maybe even keep their eyes peeled for a soul-borrowing demon.”

“Maybe not,” he sounded humored, “but I brought in an Earthside specialist to talk them through the complexities you all face while trying to search for the prisoners discreetly. It’s resulted in a more, patient air, shall we say? But I don’t know how long that will last.”

“Kaleb’s working on the escaped prisoner angle, don’t worry.
