With a decent eight hours sleep under my belt, I rose early the next morning to travel into the agency.
Grady scheduled another briefing where all agents on the case could come together, go through every victim one by one, and coordinate all we had. Heâd assigned Wilson to make notes of key facts, while I made notes relating to my visions.
On the way over, my phone rang.
It was Danâs line.
âHello,â I answered through the hands-free.
âHi, Terra.â
I almost slammed my foot on the accelerator in surprise when Coleâs voice came through the speakers.
âCole,â I spluttered out. âSorry. I thought you were Dan.â
âNo. Itâs me. Iâm in Danâs office. But I canât stay on Earthside for long. I have a meeting to get to. Just like you do, I hear?â
âYes,â I said, tentative. âIâm heading in now.â
âOkay. I wonât keep you long.â He sounded sad, tired.
âWhatâs up?â
âIâve got to have an official update with you to put on record, but I thought it might be better for us to do it over the phone.â
âOkay.â
âI wanted to speak to Dan this morning, and he said you were due in about eight. I thought I would catch you on your way in to make it easier on the both of us.â
âOh,â I whispered, hurting for him, hurting for what I once wanted.
âDan informed me youâve taken my orders on board, and that youâre working with Agent Grady on the Earthside case?â
âYes. Thatâs right.â My voice sounded too high pitched to come across as nonchalant, but I swallowed and plowed on, anyway. âWeâre still working on it. The killer is evading us so far, but we saved a potential victim yesterday. Then thereâs Koryn Stewart who we rescued prior. Weâre pissing him off, so hopefully, that will trip him up. Perhaps force him into making a mistake.â I exhaled. âItâs not like back home. Things are a lot easier over there.â
âCanât Mayra perform a tracking spell?â
âNot without knowing who he is she canât. She said sheâd need something of The Bardâs to activate the spell.â I hesitated. âPlease donât put the idea into her head.â
âI donât intend to. She needs to stay assigned to the IET for now, anyway. It pleases the Consilium that Daha Mishnal is no longer an issue, but theyâre eager for more news.â
âSure they are,â I said, exasperated at their audacity. âThey dragged their heels before the bomb went off, blocking us at every turn. Now they want everything done at the snap of their fingers. Maybe they should just send an alert out on Earthside news and tell everyone to be on the lookout for a necromancer mage. Or a sex-craved incubus. Or maybe even keep their eyes peeled for a soul-borrowing demon.â
âMaybe not,â he sounded humored, âbut I brought in an Earthside specialist to talk them through the complexities you all face while trying to search for the prisoners discreetly. Itâs resulted in a more, patient air, shall we say? But I donât know how long that will last.â
âKalebâs working on the escaped prisoner angle, donât worry.
